As a way of connecting to her Puerto Rican culture and identity, Lydia Perez began learning the Afro-Puerto Rican Music and Dance (Bomba), as well as other rhythms from the Caribbean, when she was a little girl. Her mastery and dedication to said rhythms prompted her to share her wealth of knowledge with Puerto Rican and Latino youth in her community; she has become an ambassador for the Bomba Afro-Puerto Rican Arts in Rhode Island, working with the Puerto Rican community and sharing the history of the Caribbean with her “Caribe programs” in the Arts Curriculum of Elementary, Middle and high schools and in after-school programs.
