The United States is a nation like no other. Our heritage is a colorful tapestry woven with strands of culture that tie American cultural expression - the stories we share through the arts - to traditions and legacies from around the globe. Remove one strand from the tapestry and an elegant picture is distorted and diminished. Erase the story of one people, and the beauty and value of our nation, as a whole, cannot be appreciated. African American artists and art forms have been lauded at home and abroad, yet nonprofit African American cultural institutions struggle to survive. With support from individuals, corporations, and foundations Black institutions can prosper, and ensure that our city centers thrive by showcasing the diversity that makes the United States unique.

The Providence Black Repertory Company is "illuminating the soul of humanity."
- United States Senator Jack Reed (D – RI)

Your gift to the Providence Black Repertory Company will help build an important American cultural institution.

The Providence Black Repertory Company is a place "where diversity is not just an option, it is a way of life." This organization attracts "people of all stripes, and from all walks of life."
– Michael Van Leesten, Chairman of the Board

We impact lives through art. We create opportunities, open doors, and build relationships with all communities. The Providence Black Repertory Company’s new theatre center will provide year-round access to the creation and presentation of Black theatre and art. We believe that Providence can be a city where aspiring young artists from diverse backgrounds can perform for enthusiastic audiences, and where local talent from underserved communities can start their careers. We are committed to gathering and empowering groups of people through our work. In turn, we offer hope, inspiration, and unity.

The production and presentation of a wide spectrum of multidisciplinary performances in drama, music, literature, dance, and the visual arts embodies the unique artistic work and vision of the Providence Black Repertory Company.  Serving an artistic and civic purpose, all programs span the gamut of events, programs, and activities that help uplift relevant themes and issues affecting diverse and culturally underserved communities.   Black Rep programs lend themselves to a forum whereupon varying interests in music, art, politics, education, social science, history, and broader community wellness topics are tackled.

The Providence Black Repertory Company is more than a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. It is more than a theatre with experience in bringing new voices and powerful performances to the Arts & Entertainment District of Providence. It is more than a community champion for young people and their families. The "Black Rep" is a cultural mecca where art empowers personal lives. It is a place where everyone is given the opportunity to explore their own histories and compare them to those of African Americans. It is an extension of a long legacy of social movements, civil rights, empowerment of groups of people, and a fulfillment of a King’s Dream. It is where one discovers how many of life’s experiences are truly universal. The "Black Rep" experience will leave you with an indelible mark that reminds us all to inspire hope in humanity.

A visit to the theatre is important for young people and their families and fosters an awareness of the cultural arts, but a visit to a student matinee – or a gathering on a Sunday with the People (whoever they may be) – provides everyone with a glimpse into a world where the actors on stage mirror the faces and concerns of a diverse population. By using theatre, live music, dance, visual arts, spoken word, and many other forms to emphasize the value of communication and creative problem-solving, we create an understanding and appreciation for the diversity of the world in which we live.
